Our Approach​

At WordRoots Tutoring & Dyslexia Center in Yorktown, we offer specialized tutoring in reading, writing, and spelling.

Every child deserves patient teaching, meaningful progress, and a chance to feel proud of what they can do.

The science behind reading helps explain why our instruction works. Learning to read involves connecting speech sounds with written letters and recognizing how those letters form words. Many children with dyslexia need these connections taught directly, with carefully planned practice and clear feedback. Instruction also needs to address spelling, meaningful word parts, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Orton-Gillingham methodology brings explicit, sequential teaching into lessons designed around the individual learner. Students practice through listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while the instructor adjusts the pace to their needs. Each lesson builds on what the student has already learned.

Structured Word Inquiry is used to help students understand how words work and expand vocabulary. Students investigate word meanings, histories, bases, prefixes, and suffixes while exploring connections between spelling and pronunciation.

Our Systematic Writing Instruction uses clear models, guided practice, and individualized feedback to make the steps of writing visible and manageable for children who struggle to put their ideas on paper. Our goal is to help each child develop the skills and confidence to communicate clearly, one sentence at a time.​​​​​
